Hungarian Jewish Displaced Persons and refugees in Italy

The presentation is based on my research on Hungarian Jewish Displaced Persons (DPs) and refugees. In this paper, I deal with Holocaust survivors who left Hungary after the war or – in smaller numbers – did not return to Hungary and were registered in one of the DP camps in Italy. I aim to reconstruct their fate from the materials of the Arolsen, formerly the International Tracing Service (ITS) Archive. It is difficult to estimate how many Jewish Displaced Persons and refugees were in Italy and how many were Hungarian Jews. According to the International Refugee Organization (IRO) data, at the end of 1947, the organization cared for about 18,000 to 22,000 Jewish refugees, about 6 percent of whom were Jewish.
This topic is an under-researched one. On the one hand, there has been no systematic analysis of Hungarian DPs and refugees registered by the various international organizations after WWII. On the other hand, research on DPs and refugees registered in Italy has only recently begun.
In my presentation, I aim at answering three research questions: (1) Who were those Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivors who were registered in one of the DP camps in Italy, and who applied for refugee status here? (2) How successful was their application? And finally, (3) What was their experience during the proceedings?

Előadásomban három kutatási kérdésre kívánok választ adni: (1) Kik voltak azok a magyar zsidó holokauszt túlélők, akiket Olaszország valamely hontalan tárborában regisztráltak és akik itt folyamodtak menekült státuszért?
